MORE INFORMATION:

The residents and their housing experiences play a key role when we want to understand housing behaviour and the ways it shapes the built environment. Nonetheless, the approach has not received particular interest within the housing studies.

With her doctoral research, Eija Hasu diminishes this gap of knowledge. The dissertation is based on various housing research projects examining residents’ housing choice behaviour from various perspectives. In addition, the examination embraces a critical re-evaluation regarding the most fundamental housing behaviour concepts.

The analysis indicates that the inhabitants recognise, define and explain their housing behaviour using past experiences, beliefs and knowledge. In addition, the meanings are reconstructed through the external world. The research recognises the cyclical nature of housing decision-making; it highlights housing behaviour as an on-going process throughout which the residents adjust their wants and needs according to the external world.  In this process, the inhabitants are more like bystanders trying to cope with the structures than active prosumers possessing ability to influence on housing markets and supply.
